Live Well . Laugh Often . Love Much .

Erma Bomback once wrote about her own family - "We were a strange little band of characters trudging through life sharing diseases and toothpaste, coveting one another's desserts, hiding shampoo, borrowing money, locking each other out of our rooms, inflicting pain and kissing to heal it in the same instant, loving, laughing, defending, and trying to figure out the common thread that bound us all together." These words are so true because this is exactly how it is for my family. Families come in all shapes and sizes, colors and beliefs - some traditional, some not. All the same they still are a family.

Home is Where the Heart is . . .

If Home is Where The Heart is . . .

If Home is where the heart is
Then may your Home be blessed
A shelter from the storms of Life
A place of rest,
And when each day is over
And toil put in its place
Your Home's dear warmth
Will bring its smile
To light the saddest face!

Honor Our Military

Honor Our Military

Let’s honor our military,
The men and women who serve,
Whose dedication to our country
Does not falter, halt or swerve.

Let’s respect them for their courage;
They’re ready to do what’s right
To keep America safe,
So we can sleep better at night.

Let’s support and defend our soldiers,
Whose hardships are brutal and cruel,
Whose discipline we can’t imagine,
Who follow each order and rule.

Here’s to those who choose to be warriors
And their helpers good and true;
They’re fighting for American values;
They’re fighting for me and you.

My Family [Found Poem]

Mondays so difficult.
Waking up early.
Hit up the gym
Never a dull moment.
"Meg, there better be hot water!"
So frustrating.
Silence.
Love and miss you.
Can't wait to go home.
Life.

Soundtracks of My Life

We Are Family - The Pointer Sister
["We Are Family" are three common words you can hear throughout my household. Despite the fighting and arguing, laughter and smiles, it all brings us back to the most important thing I cherish . . . family.]

What A Wonderful World - Louis Armstrong
[My father grew up in a family where he had to do many things on his own. Learning from his childhood experiences, he has grown to cherish his "family" and "What A Wonderful World" there is out there.]

What A Wonderful World - Louis Armstrong

Picture
I hear babies cry...... I watch them grow
They'll learn much more.....than I'll never know
And I think to myself .....what a wonderful world

My father use to sing "What a Wonderful World" by Louis Armstrong to me when I was a little girl. He loved watching my four brothers and I grow from hearing "babies cry" to adults that'll "learn much more." He basically raised himself since he was seven years old so he realized how important "family" was to him. He now has so much love for his own children and their love in return.

What I Believe

Picture
My family is a traditional one. One mom, one dad, four older brothers and myself, with a huge extended family with a grandmother, aunts, uncles and cousins. I've been raised knowing a family means home and home is where they love you. These are the people who guide you, encourage you, comfort you, inspire you, and even at times debate you. They are your biggest advocates when you feel no one is on your side and will reassure you in a heartbeat. They are also your biggest critics but not without a kind understanding to go along with that criticism.

Being the youngest of five children, I've often learned by example - how to ride a bike, rollerblading, throwing a football, and even wash a car. Even though I was the only girl, I was not treated any differently than the boys. I've learned to become assertive and can still hold my own in any quarrel.

My oldest brother Tim now has two young children of his own. He's setting the standard by which his children should be raised by relying on his own up bringing as an example. The example being that we all need limitations in our own lives to show that others love us and only want what is best for us. They're being taught that family are the ones who are always there in good times and bad and stand by your side no matter the outcome. My niece and nephew are not only influenced by their immediate family but by their extended family of grandparents, aunts and uncles. They've come to realize that they are not only loved by mommy and daddy but by so many others too.

Desmond Tutu once said, "You don't choose your family. They are God's gift to you, as you are to them." In our family that is how we have been raised to feel. We were told that we were each a special gift with a specific purpose in mind and meant to be part of this family. No matter what is happening around us we can walk into our home and find someone there who would lay down their life to protect another person in this family. It's the love and support of people who at times will disagree with you, but will be loyal and true and never abandon you no matter the cost. This is family - unconditional love.

In the movie, "The Wizard of Oz," the wizard tells the tin man that a heart is not judged by how much you love, but by how much you are loved by others. Without any hesitation, I know I am love and will continue to always be loved by my family.
